Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Budget-friendly New Year's dinner?

We're from Toronto and visiting SF for a week on a student budget. We're looking for casual, fun, non-touristy places in general, but especially for New Year's eve....perhaps near a strip where we could do a pub crawl afterwards.

The first night we're staying near Market and 7th, so we also need a rec for dinner then too. Thanks!

  1. There are lots of cheap eats near 7th and Market -- it's kind of a divey area. For something you might not get much of in Toronto, try Comida Yucatan y City Pizza. Here's a recent cheap-eats discussion: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/577297

At the risk of the wrath of the moderators, you really should see if you can get a nicer place to stay via Priceline.com. Studying the tips on this site (which I learned about on Chowhound) has saved me thousands of dollars: www.biddingfortravel.com

Thanks for the cheap-eats list! We'll definitely try Pastores and Broken Record.

I'm really excited to go to the Ferry Farmers' Market on Saturday morning. Larkin Express, Tadich Grill and Cafe Tartine are also on the list. Any recs for dim sum? I've heard that Yank Sing is pricey and overrated.

Whether Yank Sing is overrated is debatable, but there's no arguing it's pricey! For super cheap and delicious (but not fancy) dim sum, I'd checkout Dol Ho. Also, if you go to Tadich, I suggest you consider sharing an entree -- it's not cheap, but the portions are generous.

    2. So ... where did you eat and how did you like it?
