Quality French Style Pastry/Tarte in DC

lukeinva Dec 21, 2008 11:47 AM

Can anyone suggest a good bakery in DC where I can get a nice tarte au pommes? Or other French-style tarte with fruit (strawberry, etc). One that will serve 8 people. Many thanks. Capitol Hill neighborhood preferred but elsewhere, too.

Don't know how strict you are about "French-style", but there are great tarts at Whole Foods and Asian bakeries (Shilla/Cakes By Happy Eatery). You might also want to check out Tivoli (Ballston and Arlington locations) -- they have great pastries I hear.

Not DC proper, but Pastries by Randolph in Arlington has excellent French tartes. And, at the risk of being flamed, the pear raspberry (and other fruit) tartes at Costco are really pretty good. Definitely feeds more than 8 though.

patisserie poupon - in Georgetown. Best French pastries in the area imo. No question.

I second the Patisserie Poupon, they are on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Georgetown. You can't beat them.

Thanks for the recommendation, this is exactly the sort of place I was looking for. Proving once again the power of the chow boards.

(Unfortunately I have to wait until tomorrow as their hours (per google) are closed on Mondays)

Le Pain Quotidien is a very popular Belgian chain in Paris that has a branch in Georgetown. Quality is sky high.

i totally disagree, le pain quotidien's quality is dirt low.

there are threads on the board relating to this.
stick with patisserie poupon, leopolds, etc.

I just did a search. There are no negative posts on this board about Pain Quotidien's pastry. There is one very negative thread about the service and service related issues as they affect the food. But if you are just going to walk up and get pastry, as I have done on a few occassions, then I stand by my rec. The pastry at the Georgetown location is similar to what you will find at their very popular branches in Paris.
