Engine Co. No. 28 Dish Recs?

I'll be at Engine Co. No. 28 tomorrow night in Downtown LA. Any dishes of particular note to pay attention to?

  1. I normally have their chili which has a kick without searing your taste buds off.

    1. Garlic fries
      Corn chowder

        I can't say I've had corn chowder before. That's a definite maybe.

      2. We've eaten there quite a few times pre-theatre. I like it fine, it's not overly expensive, they make a decent cocktail, and their shuttle to the Music Center works reliably. However none of the dishes particularly stand out in my memory. I think my husband and I have shared their Caesar salad as a starter. Once I had a pretty good swordfish which IIRC was a special. It's the type of place where it's best to stick with the simpler dishes.

Looking a the menu I take it then the comfort things, like the aforementioned meatloaf, are the way to go.

From our 6 or so visits that is absolutely the case. And I concur with the meatloaf too.

Yes, comfort food is Engine Co.'s strong suit.

So, yeah, meatloaf is good, chowder is good (esp. in this weather), the fries are a can't miss proposition.

That said, avoid the chicken fried steak.

        2. This is the brief review I wrote on Opentable the last time I went.

"we ordered dishes off the specials and were disappointed. The short ribs were lukewarm and flavorless. The fish dish was supposed to be halibut but was some other kind of fish. The rice that came with the dish was soggy and inedible. The lemonade was sold as "homemade" from fresh lemons but tasted like chemicals and too sweet. Will not be returning to Engine Co. anytime soon."

So, I'd order comfort food on the regular menu as others have suggested. Meatloaf is pretty good and probably your best bet.

Is this the meatloaf sandwich or the meatloaf entree?

            1. re: ReelMike84

The trouble with the meatloaf sandwich is that it is cold. I think their Engine Co. 28 meatloaf dinner is the way to go.
