Houston for one night

We'll be spending one evening in Houston on Dec. 27th and staying at the Hyatt Summerville Suites (near the Galleria I believe).

We do not know Houston at all!!!! We'd like a not too expensive of a place, BBQ and steak preferred, no ethnic and a place where we can talk (and be heard) that's nice but not super expensive (I looked at Sullivan's but it was expensive and looked noisy).

We won't have a car so any suggestions close to our hotel will be greatly appreciated.

Also, How is Le Peep for breakfast? It looks good and it's walking distance for us.

  1. Les, You need to look that up. When I checked the location you are in West Houston, nowhere near the Galleria. Here is the address:

    Hyatt Summerfield Suites Houston/Energy Corridor
    15405 Katy Freeway
    Houston, Texas 77094, USA

I'll look at it on a map, but I'm not too sure there will be much in walking distance.

Luling City Market Bar-BQ is probably your best bet. Super close.

        Luling City Market Bar-BQ‎
        4726 Richmond Ave

Le Peep is a chain; not my cup of tea. Kenny and Ziggy's (jewish deli) has a decent breakfast and isn't too far from where you're staying.

Thanks, Bulldozer. I looked at Luling City Mkt but one website gave it pretty bad reviews.

Kenny & Ziggy's looks good, thanks.

Do you know anything about Bubba's Texas Buger Shack?

I would second Bulldozers Luling City recommendation, but, bar-bq in the evening can be very hit or miss at a place like this. As a rule, the earlier you get there, as in 11AM, the better. As for the website with bad reviews, this will be true of any bar-bq place, bar-bq in Texas is very polarizing, plus, one cut of meat may be better than another at any given time. Your request is a tough one, steaks are expensive, and without a car your choices are limited. I'd suggest a cab, there are many places within a 2-5 mile radius. As for Le Peep I went there once and have not been back, and while Bubbas is somewhat above average, I would not make it my choice for one night in Houston. Check out b4ueat for other places in the area.

Thanks, James. Unfortunately we won't be flying in until the afternoon so 11:00am is out of the question.

Maybe I misled you guys on my price point. We don't mind a mid-range place, but where I'm from good steak houses are $$$$ to $$$$$, we're looking in the $$ to $$$ range. Taking a cab is a good idea. What places would you recommend with a short cab ride?

How about seafood? I have some ideas there. Other than that, and based on your original preferences, steak, bbq, or possibly burgers, and no ethnic, I checked out b4ueat and the only thing I saw was Pappas Burgers (very close). There is another alternative, and I hesitate to mention due to it being owned by local pariah Tilman Fertitta gone national is Saltgrass Steaks on I-10 and Shepherd. The steaks won't break the bank and can be pretty good, you get what you pay for. The last time I went it was good, but the waiter had the nerve to ask me if I wanted change, I gave him $40 for a $25 or less tab. Somebody do the math. I don't know if this brainstorm was his idea or something Fertitta installs in his troopers.

    2. Are you taking a cab from the airport? You'd be better off going ahead and getting a car. If you're coming in to IAH, you could hit one of the better bbq places on the north side on the way to the hotel.

I agree with what's been said on Luling - avoid it at night. Next closest would be Goode Co. on Kirby. I have no idea what cab rates are, but 15 minutes each way probably.

Check out and use Galleria for part of town and try bbq and steakhouses and see what your options are. The Galleria area is a very pricey part of town and all the major upscale steak houses are in the immediate vicinity. Best would be local - Pappas Brothers - very expensive.

Also, Le Peep would be a pretty good walk if you ask me. Houston is not a food traffic town and you'll be strolling down one of the busiest streets and through a couple of the busiest intersections in town.

Forget about Bubba's unless you want a burger dive.

      1. Where is the Le Peep you are looking at? When I go to and put in the zip code I don't see a Le Peep in the area of your hotel. One way you can see what is really close by is to put in the address at, and then chose the option of showing restaurants nearby. Then you can see what is really close and what will require a cab ride.
