My brother, who is joining us for a few days, loves hole in the walls like Franky and Johnny's (we could go back there again) but we also need one that my 93 year old Mom will like too. We need one that we can either get a reservation to, which is not likely, or that does not have a huge line on Dec 23 around 6:30 or 7:00. Long lines are always a good sign, but my mom hates to wait. Any ideas? Something in the French quarter or nearby would be ideal, but we have access to a car so game for anywhere. Noise is not a plus, but then that is what most hole in the walls have. Thinking Coop's or we could do something totally different, just not fine dining as we are going to Cuvee the next night. Any thoughts from any of you about must eats at those we have chosen would be really helpful. I will post our reviews upon returning. I feel fatter already.

Not to fear that we have missed many great choices as in April we will eat at Stella's, Wolf's, Gautreau's, Herbsaint (again), Cochon (again) and many more.

  1. I see that you have Pho Tau Bay on the list...so I'm assuming that you're o.k. with coming to the Westbank hawt. LOL The best hole in the wall IMHO is Cafe 615...otherwise known as Da Wabbit. It's on the Westbank. Be sure to get the Soft Shelled Crab Orleans...it is truly heaven on a plate!

Thanks nikinik, I will look into Da Wabbit (Cafe 615). No fear of traveling for a good soft shelled crab. My husband has a serious love of them. After taking to a good friend yesterday, Luizza's By the Track may be the perfect place to take my Mom and Brother to for some local fare. My friend has come down for a couple of weeks each year for the past 21 years for Jazz fest. He is a serious foodie who keeps copious notes on everywhere he eats. Then I talked to the lady who is renting us her condo in the FQ and she had just eaten a cup of gumbo and a ruben there for supper. She loves Luizza's BTT. Also Mandina's. Any thoughts. Off to catch a plane. I will check back tonight from the FQ.

Mandina's has really good gumbo and I have heard that the BBQ shrimp po boy at Liuzza's is really good...though I've never tried it. I've only been to Liuzza's at 10:00 a.m. for bloody marys before the fest!

    2. Mumba-Hope you had a good flight.Cafe Amelie looks interesting. If you go to The Coffee Pot,try the calas. This is one of only a few places left in town to try these Creole specialties.Maybe a comparison between the duck po boys at Mahony's v. Crabby Jacks? Can't wait for the report.Chow,Andy

      1. Try to go to Croissant d'or on Saturday and (I'm not sure) Sunday. They have the royal brioche which is brioche filled with custard and raisins! Great coffee.
