Ventana-Chowhound Dinner-- WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amykragan Dec 16, 2008 07:36 PM

I know there are some great reviews coming, but here's our menu:

1st Course: Frisee Salad
poached egg, bacon lardon, croutons, roasted garlic vinaigrette
wine pairings: La Tordera Prosecco Brut, Veneto & Reinhard Knebel Riesling 2005, Mosel

2nd Course: Curried Lentil Soup
green lentils, bacon, potato, coconut creme fraiche (this was to die for & the knife skills were great)
wine pairings: Jekel Gewurztraminer 2005 Monterey & Cantine barbera Insolia 2005 Sicily

3rd Course: Tempura Nori wrapped tuna
yellowfin tuna, nicoise "slaw", citrus soy vinaigrette
wine pairings: Avinyo Cava Rosato Brut, Spain & Paco & Lola Albarino 2007, Rias Baias

Entree: Duo of Texas Beef Steak Frites (beef coullotte, sauce bernaise) & Hoisin Braised Short Ribs (fresh horseradish mashed potatoes, honey glazed carrots, soy lacquered pearl onions)
wine pairings: Kim Crawford Estate Pinot Noir 2007, New Zealand (the crowd favorite) & JRE "Tradition" Zinfandel 2005, Ca

Desert: "Candy Bar"
chocolate flourless cake, caramel coated peanuts, chocolate mousse, dark chocolate sorbet
wine pairing: Rosa Regale Brachetto d' Acqui 2007, Italy

What an amazing feast and the service and place settings were top notch.
We had our own personal sommelier that explained each wine and how it complimented the food; several waiters and a finale visit by the the chef instructor.

Truly one of my most memorable and pleasant meals in Austin.

...and how was the sushi caliente dining group experience? The post has been padlocked at the top of the page for the last 15 or so years and I was wondering how the food out there is.

It never happened and I've contacted the chowhound team to please remove that post. I'm tired of looking at it too, they haven't taken it down and I'm not sure why!

Hold on to your hat... $25 or $35 if you wanted the 9 wine tastings!

i've never been to ventana before.
is this price point for a normal tasting menu-type thing, or was this a special prix fixe for the chowhound dinner?

i still want to go, regardless. it sounds great!

I haven't been lately but that sounds like the normal price to me. I've gotta get back there SOON!

That sounds wonderful! I didn't know about this gathering and would have been there if I had.

Actually, I couldn't find Ventana the last time I tried due to construction in the area, even though I've been half a dozen times. Any tips? Did they move from the IBM campus?

It sounds like I missed something special!!!

We sent emails to the people on the yahoo group and did an Evite. I also posted here about it but the Chowhound team removed it and said we had to organize it through the yahoo group and could only post reviews here after the event.

They are still in the original location, you turn into the domain drivethrough and then right into the parking lot.
You can't really see it from Burnet much anymore due to construction, but it's still there and providing amazing meals & service!
I'm looking forward to my next trip there!

Sushi Caliente is gone! I found your email address and asked to be added to the group. Thanks!

It sounded like a good idea and fooled me. I do need to clarify, I meant that the post for the Chowhound dining group there was gone. I don't know if the restaurant is still around.

We sent an email to amykragan indicating she's welcome to post the information about the group, so we hope she'll do that.

OK, this is an old thread, but I gotta put in my two centavos.

This is precisely what caused eGullet to lose the bulk of their content creators back in ... when was it? 03? 04? Classic example of a fundamental misunderstanding of social media. I'm surprised CH is still following that model.

Ventana still sounds awesome, anyone been recently?

that online menu is very outdated. I've been recently and its still an excellent value for the level of cooking you are getting. The service is also much more friendly than most restaurants I find.
