Am thinking of getting an iPhone if, per rumor, Walmart starts selling cheap ones early next year http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/apple-iphone-could-lose-some/story.aspx?guid=%7B5C610529-9AE7-4687-A528-B2CEEDF0CA07%7D

Are there any good iPhone apps for chowhounding or cooking? If not, what would be your fantasy food-related iPhone apps?

I use mine when in an unfamiliar area: I drop a pin on the "maps" app (comes with phone) as to where I am and then search for "Vietnamese food" and pins drop around where I am. I can do the same for "Starbucks" and "Trader Joe's"...whatever...then click onto a pin and the address/phone/web page link shows up and you can ask for directions for how to get from here to there...

It connects to the internet and you can google anything.

I have found I need to have warm fingertips to use it (stylus will not work) and that the keyboard requires a definite technique/light touch.

Then there is the issue of all print seeming to get too small for my eyes...and if you enlarge it on the iPhone, too large for the screen and needing to scroll to read.

I love it.

Many sites have mobile versions of their offerings. For example, Wine Spectator, 101 Cookbooks.

And, there are applications for everything food related in the app store - wine, coctails, tipping, Open Table, Burger Lover, Wine Enthusiast, Allrecipes.com, Zagat to Go, Local Eats, Urban Spoon, and Yelp among others.

And, Google Street view has arrived on the iPhone and with that you can figure out exactly what a place looks like as you try to find it.

The iphone camera is perfect for taking (inconspicuous and always on you) pics of food if you're so inclined. There's a free "night camera" app for taking pics in low level lighting that you can download, it's great if you have unsteady hands.

Most of the apps are available and better on your desktop computer, so unless you need it when traveling (eg. urbanspoon or opentable to find a restaurant in the area) it's not the best reason to get one.

I just recently got an Iphone. I'm familiar with all the applications that BostonZest mentions. I think Urbanspoon might appeal to you most; it's the only one where the Iphone application is often more useful and fun than the Web version.

I enjoy the 'shake it" feature. It can detect where you are (or you can specify a location) and you literally shake the phone and it will push a restaurant at you, either from the entire pool of restaurants, or with specifications that you suggest. If Urbanspoon doesn't have a menu available, you can take a photo with your iphone and upload it. On the downside, the user base isn't particularly chow savvy.

I've been keeping track of this story and it seems like it maybe a bit overblown. I've now read 2 reports that say the Walmart iphone will be sold at just $2 less than you can get it at other outlets. $197 for the 8g and $297 for the 16g.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/17/walmart-iphone-on-sale-the-28th-for-a-lot-more-than-99/

That having been said, yelp works amazingly well for the iphone. Urbanspoon is fun but as Dave Feldman points out the userbase is not very reliable.
