Champagne score...maybe?

I happen to walk by a closeout basket at my local grocery store and to my suprise they had 1 bottle of Krug grand reserve and 3 bottles of Duval - Leroy Brut Millesime 1990 Elegance De Champagne for $25 each. I took a chance on condition and bought all 4. Any ideas on the 1990's.? I know it was a great year but these bottles are almost 19 yrs. old.

    1. Nice try.

I don't believe this first-time post from someone with "BS" in their handle. Supermarkets ain't gonna stock those wines in the first place.

If it really makes you happy: Wow! What a great deal!

why would i lie?, i have lurked on chow for about a year and was just looking for some idea about the 1990's. Oh and i think plenty of us shop at stores now that carry high-end bottles.

          thanks

          • If you have 3, open one soon and find out. Should be pretty awesome.

              1. They should be very good IF the storage conditions were half decent. They may be very light in bubbles and will be more like a wine. Actually I prefer a champagne with some age as opposed to the French... I find young brut chamapgane a little too high in acidity especially the top cuvees and age smooths them out..

Anyway, for $25 you cannot really lose. Let us all know how the first bottle is.

I feel a little better now. I am going to try one of the Duval's this week. Any ideas on pairing? I have had older vintage champagne twice and both times thought it was a little rich to have on it's own. Thanks

If it makes you feel any better I walked into a tiny market around the corner and found several bottles of 1982 Piper Sonoma for $18. I'm a total sucker and bought a bottle to try...Sadly, it was completely flat.

I tried a bottle of the Duval-Leroy on Wed. night. Very much alive and well. Gold in color with a slow fine bead. Nose was apples and a little burnt sugar. Taste was sour apples and caramel that gave way to a long wonderfully tart finish. It may have been a tad one dimisional but it was exciting to try the oldest vintage champagne I have ever had. Served it with and without food(truffel tremor, toast points, cured meats) and it was very nice both ways.
