George's (new location) in Haverhill????

stopped by for a couple of beers at the bar Saturday and i must say that the place looks pretty nice. it's almost as if someone took the Disney out of The Cheesecake Factory in a good way.

i didn't really see too much that came out of the kitchen except for two fish dishes that the couple next to me ordered. one had the haddock and the other the Sea Bass, both of which looked typical (mashed and green beans), but not spectacular.

the service was pretty good but the regulars from the old location definitely get preferred treatment. i sat with an empty glass for almost 10 minutes while both bartenders tended the aforementioned couple right next to me.

i'm going to try to get back this week to sample some of the app menu.

anyone have any experiences they'd care to share?

p.s. the Staff are Very Attractive.....

went the other night and sat at the Bar. we were on the run that abutted the DR and the noise level was quite high.

we started by splitting the Chicken Paprikash (a special) and found it to be rather bland. it had none of the smoky heat that i associate with this dish. the accompanying mashed potato and green beans were pedestrian.

next i had the Pork Shank and while cooked nicely with a down-home style sauce the presentation was of a big gloopy lump. my DC had the scallops with gnocchi. there were three (or maybe four) nice large sea scallops that could of been better with a more aggressive sear. the gnocchi were awful, heavy, grainy in texture, just not good at all.

with two glasses of wine and one beer the bill was about $80 before tip.

service was pleasant with only a slightly longer than average wait between apps and mains, but then, it was fairly busy.

on a side note, we did enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the third floor lounge which seemed as if it would be a nice place to catch some live music. however the beers available on tap are severely limited.

We went the other night for Hubby's birthday. Food was excellent..I had the swordfish and ordered it with Shitake Mushroom Risotto which they charged a $4 upcharge..which was fine. It was delicious and gave a large portion of both fish and risotto. My husband had the steak which was cooked perfectly. Bread/Oil was good, service was adequate. Nice presentation of the meals also..served on square plates.

However, we did not care for the atmosphere in there. It's big and open and loud. Voices from other tables echo. We were sitting near the wall on the side and it was freezing cold. I ate with winter my jacket on!! My long time Haverhill resident neighbor told me it was the Pentucket Bank years old...yah..It feels like you are eating in the lobby of a bank!! I think they could put some partitions up and make it a little cozier in there.

i know what you mean about the noise. that's why we always sit at the bar where you can get close to your DC. the other complaint we have is the muzak, it's awful. we were there again this past Saturday for drinks and remarked that they were playing something more recent and hip, they replied that it was a temporary change (for the better) and that the crappy old music would be back when their XM came back.

I don't think we'll go back...like the coziness of Keon's and Bistro 45 and Pow Wow River Grill much better.

no argument here on Keon's, i'm there every Saturday, and some weekday nights. we've been liking George's mostly for the change-up and we usually only go for drinks.

I ended up having dinner here during the friday night snow storm. I got a closer look at the George Washington wall art which I thought was a painted on the wall, but after a closer look, it appears to be a print that someone had gold paint on parts of it to make certain areas stand out...very impressive image when you enter.
It was a quiet night due to the snow storm, and they may have been a little short staffed or let some people go early because the service was a little off, but nothing major. One of the salads was served to the wrong person. I had the pork shank which was excellent. Friends had venison which he said was very good, and two had a sirloin steak which they gave a nothing great but OK, mashed with the steaks were a little cold.
The weather may have had a lot to do with everything, and everyone I was with was didn't feel like being out that night....I'll give it another try though sometime.
I'm not to crazy about how exposed one side of the bar is to the dining area, and how open it is when you just walk in.

Just down the street (towards the Post Office).
in the space that was formerly The Vault.

I went to a soft opening the Saturday after Thanksgiving with some friends. I liked what they did with the place, and the gold foil or painting wall mural of George Washington was pretty interesting. they were serving a lot of apps. that night and only a one choice of three entrees. Only the first two floors were open, and I think they want to open a Jazz bar on the third floor.

I'll be there this Friday night in a party of six, and will post post back here with a follow up.
