There's a place called Enrique's Tamales in Monrovia I keep passing, but have never eaten there. Maybe other chowhounders can enlighten us about their tamales.

I tried it out a couple years ago and deemed the tamales blech. Would NOT recommend - although, they do make them on site.

Although it's been a while since I've had them here - I think you'd be better off getting some at the Pasadena farmer's market at PHS on a Saturday morning.

I know you want local - but if you are willing to hop on the metro - take the gold line and the red line to mcarthur park - the perfect spot for a Tamale virgin is Mama's Hot Tamales - a variety of tamales to sample in a sit-down restaurant.

Mama's Hot Tamales are not worth the trip. Dry, small, and skimpy on the fillings
