Chicken Farms - Roasters & Fryers?

  • 4

I'm looking for local farms that sell organic, free range chickens. Ideally I'd like to be able to visit the farm and check out the conditions, but I'll take a good, reputable farm that sells directly to the public via a farmer's market or other such outlet. I'm in Oakland but I'd be willing to travel an hour or two if I can stock up.

Also, our family just took several animals to slaughter and now we've got hundreds of pounds of organic, mostly grass fed, pasture raised beef, lamb, mutton, goat, and alpaca. We're not licensed so we're not selling it, but it would be awesome if I could find someone out there who would be willing to trade poultry for red meat. In a perfect world a straight across exchange could be worked out. If anyone out there knows of such a place who would be willing, please let me know!

  1. You might check out the Marin Sun Farms website. They have a butcher shop in Point Reyes but you can also find them at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Saturdays and Sundays at Marin County Civic Center Farmer's Market. They have farm tours but it looks like they are not scheduling until Spring 2009.

Thanks. I'd love a place that's just situation somewhere and I can stop in and grab chickens. Does such a place exist?

"They have a butcher shop in Point Reyes." It is open all year. I would call first if you want more than a few. I would also check quite soon as chicken availability is waning.
