How long can I keep yogurt in the fridge?

I have this yogurt (La Yogurt Probiotic) that I forgot about. The sell-by date is Aug 2008. Is it safe to eat?

    1. I'm generally jumpy about expiration dates, and toss things on the theory that one yogurt or whatever isn't worth the anxiety. But sometimes I think things really last a lot longer than I imagine. The other day I found a Greek yogurt in the back of my second fridge that had expired in June. The seals on Fage yogurts aren't that great and I figured it would be moldy, but it wasn't. In fact it was perfectly edible. Still, I felt weird about it and I gave it to the dog (he loved it). So it's a personal judgement call -- I guess you have to taste it, and if it tastes good, you have to decide if it'll make you nuts to eat it.

      1. Was it opened previously? If not, probably okay. Just check carefully that it's not moldy (white, yellow, orange or green). It probably will be much more tangy.

I've assumed you have no immune system deficiencies.

        1. Wow, August 2008??

I'm pretty lax when it comes to expiration or "use by" or "sell by" dates -- I normally will keep and eat yogurt that is 2 or 3 months past its "sell by" date, but Aug 08 is really pushing it.

Open it and see what looks like. If it were me, if it tasted and looked ok, I'd go ahead and eat it with no qualms.
