looking for spumoni ice cream

Is there a source for spumoni ice cream in TO.? There used to be a great one (IMO) marketed under Laura Secord brand but that is no longer available. It had a really rich chocolate component. The one made by Dorgel/ Sicilian Ice Cream Co contains rutabaga which rather puts me off. My take being a cheap "crunch effect" instead of a full complement of candied fruit peel etc. And the flavours seem to be a bit understated.

  1. The Old Spaghetti factory offers it for take-home and also as a free desert to every meal...

Most people on here hate the place though.

I second Old Spaghetti Factory for spumoni ice cream. Say what you will about the place I recall their spumoni being killer. It’s a specialty there, for what that is worth. Last time I was there was like 6 years ago, and frankly I don’t recall my meal being bad at all. The ice cream was the highlight though.

I'm with you on that, I mean sure it's not fine dining, but it's pretty hard to screw up a chicken parmesean dinner. I certainly don't recall "hating" it.

And yep, the spumoni was pretty nice too :)

Om Nom Nom love spagetti factory and the spumoni ice cream.

I've only had spumoni ice cream at the Spaghetti Factory and it was very tasty. I've never had it before and it was a pleasant surprise. The pasta wasn't bad either.

Does anyone know where Old Spaghetti Factory gets their spumoni (brand, type, etc.)? I've been wondering about that for some time now.

                That's a good question. I don't know.

I wonder if they make it on premises. I'd be surprised if they did but then again who would supply this chain with a signature ice cream??

Call and ask. Worth a shot.

    2. fiesta farms carries a few brands, but i didn't take a notice which ones. might be worth checking out.

      1. Second your take on the Dorgel, except that in place of "understated" I would say "insipid". Which is what I suspect you may have meant.

Spumoni seems to have disappeared utterly in the past few years. The Avondale ice cream factory in Niagara-on-the-lake, which makes three dozen or so flavours, including such classics (?) as chocolate donut and graham cracker crunch, no longer makes spumoni. Even the Italian supermarket in St. Catharines doesn't carry it -- "We used to have it and people used to buy it, but nobody asks for it anymore," the owner told me.

And yet 15 years ago it was mainstream enough that one of the 12 flavours in my university caf's ice cream bar was always spumoni.

Old Spaghetti Factory is no help either... not only do they not sell it to take away, the manager described the stuff they do provide to diners as "chocolate and vanilla, and mint". So they may be affected by the Great Spumoni Famine like everyone else.

I guess Fiesta Farms is the next place to try... Or surely there must be some market along College that sells it (of course, I thought the Italian market in St. Catharines would be a sure thing).

        1. A waiter at old spaghetti Factory told me they get it from Nestlé and it comes in big tubs.

          1. re: Ratcle

The last time I went there (several years back), the spumoni was just neopolitan with green "pistachio" subbed in for the vanilla... no nuts or dried fruit.
