Chicken XLB at Asian Masala In Artesia (Beef Too?)
I was driving through Little India when I passed the DiHo shopping center and noticed a new sign on the directory "Asian Masala." It didn't immediately register since I'm not particularly fond of Indian style Chinese food. Then it occurred to me that the last Indian Chinese place in the area closed down a few years ago, so I doubled back to take a look. Outside the restaurant the sign proclaimed "Halal Indo-Pak Style Chinese Food," but looking at the menu it wasn't exactly what I expected. While they had a section described as Indian Chinese fusion, the menu also had a second section of Chinese dishes. Real Chinese dishes. Chinese owner and cooks. Hotpots. Hainan chicken. Thick cut noodle dishes. Several kinds of dumplings. I narrowed my choice to the dumplings and ordered fish and chicken. When I looked at the first batch of dumplings I wondered why they were made in the distinctive shape of soup dumplings. Could it be chicken XLB? Never thought about such a possibility, but I popped one in my mouth and "Slurp!" Yes indeed, chicken XLB. Interestingly the fish dumplings were just regular fish dumplings. Other dumplings on the menu included beef dumplings and vegetable dumplings. I wonder if either of them are also soup dumplings. Asian Masala is at 18347-51 Pioneer Bl. in Artesia. It's on the side of the shopping center that does not have a view of 183rd St.
