Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Midwest

Recs in Milwaukee & Iowa City

My husband & I will spend one night in each city next week. We tend to prefer the gems over the hype. Please help! The boards for them are somewhat overwhelming...

    1. We need your help too: Are you looking for high-end gems or low-end gems? Do you know what part of town you'll be staying in? Any price or ethnic limitations? Anything else that you particulaly like or dislike?

We like both high AND low-end gems. We are staying near Marquette and the University, respectively but will have a car. No limitations whatsoever, although I am not a huge fan of organ meats. THANKS!

OK then. If I had one dinner in Milwaukee and wanted to spend $100 for 2 (depending on the wine), I would go to Chez Jacques, 1022 S 1st St. Here's a link:
              http://www.chezjacques.com/

If I wanted to spend $20.00 on dinner for 2 (depending on getting seconds), I would head to Real Chili at 1625 W Wells.

The link gives an address on East Wells, and that location is just as good, but the West Wells location is closer to the Marquette area, and it's probably easier to park around there.

If I wanted something about or above the middle, I'd go to Meritage, 5921 W Vliet St. (pronounced VLEET).

There are, of course, dozens of options at both ends of the spectrum, and hundreds in between. Enjoy your visit.

If I had one dinner in Milwaukee and had no price limit, I would go to Sanford. One of the very best restaurants in the entire Midwest. www.sanfordrestaurant.com
