It's a small thing, but I like how their side salad has beets in it. The fiery ajo is also terrific, and won't make you an untouchable for the next six hours, unlike the garlic sauce at Zankou.

Also on Vermont near 165th Street.

Good beans and tortillas for dipping in that fantastic green hot stuff.

Though I didn't think around $10 for the whole chicken was necessarily dirt cheap when you can get the Supermarket birds for far less.

The costco chicken is the best value, while any of the grocery chains are truly the worst value at any price, as they are virtually flavorless.

The Costco birds are an amazing deal. Must be brined, because the flavor goes all the way down to the bone. But they don't have a 10 items or less line.

The time to go to Costco at least in the Van Nuys store is around 3:30-5p.m., where you will find lines of no more than 2-3 people. I have gotten in and out in less than 10 minutes on some occasions, many times in less than 15 minutes. You obviously have to know where the chicken is, which I definitely do.

Yes! That time of day is by far the best time to go to Costco (same for the one on Los Feliz Blvd.) I think it is because the free food sample tables have been put away by that time.

Three other possibilities, in ascending order by price:

1. Dino's Burger (which, given your handle, is a natural). This place makes very good roast chicken, served on a big pile of french fries and dowsed in their secret hot sauce. Rough neighborhood, but great food and very good prices. 2575 W Pico Blvd., (213) 380-3554

2. For my money, the absolute best roast chicken in town (including Zankou) is the rotisserie chicken at Marouch. You have to call ahead, because they only make it to order and it takes 45 minutes, but it is superb. Tender and juicy, with a perfectly seasoned crispy skin. Truly, a thing of beauty. Their garlic sauce is better than Zankou too. (Also, try a bowl of their yellow lentil soup -- wonderful.) 4905 Santa Monica Blvd., (323) 662-9325.

3. Moustache Cafe. This place actually makes a reasonably good rendition of the classic poulet frites. The white meat is sometimes a touch on the dry side, but the chicken has a nice flavor, the skin is usually nice and crispy, and their frites are excellent. Can be ordered with a side of creamed spinach. Also, their combo grand marier/chocolate soufflé is one of my favorite desserts in LA. 8155 Melrose Ave., (323) 651-2111.
