Jack's Fish Spot in the market - pretty sure they're the only fishmonger there smoking their own fish.

Doesn't Pure Fish smoke their own - or at least have it smoked for them? Regardless, I think it's the best smoked salmon in the city.

I'm a little skeptical of the Pike Place Market fishmongers' smoked salmon. I try only to buy wild salmon. With the fresh stuff, they usually have signs that give clues. But at Pike Place Fish, for example, there are various vacuum packed pieces just piled up in one display case.

Two different sellers there have given me different stories. One said the plain smoked king salmon was wild, the spicy, etc., was farmed. Another said the smoked white king salmon was wild, the other smoked king was farmed.

I just looked at the websites for Pike Place Fish and Pure Food Fish. The fact that neither one claims their smoked salmon is wild makes it very likely that it's farmed salmon..

Farmed salmon is bad for the environment and bad for wild salmon.
Friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon!

The salmon at Pike Place Fish varies whether it's wild or farm raised. Right now they have wild caught smoked king from Alaska but I know at other times it has been farm raised in British Columbia by Creative Salmon Co. Last week the traditional was wild but the pepper/garlic was farmed.

I always look at the sticker on the back of the vacuum pack- it says whether it's wild or not. I doubt either seller lied to you though. Probably just a different shipment.

Thanks for your comment, scjolly. I think the last time there was no label on the package that I got. But I just looked at another package which does, indeed, say "wild ... packed by Bornstein Seafoods."

Go to the Ballard Farmers Market on Sundays and find Wilson's Fish. Smoked salmon and smoked halibut. Amazing.

Mutual fish makes a very good kippered salmon which is much moister and flavorful than the vacuum packed crap that is in the grocery stores.

The seafood market at Fisherman's Terminal has a great selection of smoked salmon - I think it's called Wild Salmon Seafood Market. If you go to Fisherman's Terminal (where the restaurant Chinooks is located), you can't miss it.
