my boyfriend's father has a backyard smoker and i'm looking to get him a cookbook. i'm less interested in the history or emotion (peace and love) of bbq, and am aiming to find a book that is full of reliable (and obviously tasty) recipes. any suggestions?

I would highly recommend the James Beard award winner, "The Barbeque Bible" by Steve Raichlen. The front of the book gives all the good basics on the "how-to" do real barbeque and thruout the book there are good basic recipes for bbq rubs, bbq sauces, as well as the "tried and true" pork rib, brisket, etc recipes.

Are you aware that there is a book called "Peace, Love and Barbecue" ?
Although you said that is exactly what you didn't want, I have a copy and it would suit, as it does contain many good recipes.

The BBQ Bible by Steve Raichlen is good, but I'd recommend "Smoke & Spice: Cooking with Smoke" by Bill and Cheryl Jamison first. It's an excellent book that has some excellent recipes. Heck, you can get both in "like new" condition at Amazon for a deal.
The VIrtual Weber Bullet website (www.virtualweberbullet.com) also has some good recipes as well if he has a Weber or another brand of water smoker.

oh! three excellent recommendations - thank you all so much.

(ps: Tee, i had done a little research - enough to have learned about "Peace, Love and Barbecue" - it's good to know that it contains solid recipes)
