While I love the sushi I love, I have always been wary of the more 'exotic' (which probably means 'traditional') types of sushi. I avoided sea urchin, eel and some other things that seemed too far out for me.

Then this weekend, I had a meal at Sushi Tenn on Sawtelle. They have three levels of chef's choice menus and we chose the most basic, which comes with miso soup (which had tofu with a firmer texture than I am used to in this soup - totally yummy), a sushi selection and ice cream or sorbet. When we sat down, a friendly waiter told us that the place only served traditional Japanese sushi, but asked if there was anything we wanted to avoid. My girlfriend and I were still too wary of eel, and neither of us likes shiso leaf, so we asked to avoid those two items.

The sushi that did come was beautifully presented and, on occasion, a revelation. The red snapper was one of the bext tasting pieces of sushi I have ever had. My girlfriend, who thought she did not like salmon or salmon roe, truly loved the former and was quite happy with the latter. She also was totally enthralled with the belly tuna, tuna and pickle rolls and the sea urchin. I was surprised at the mildness of the urchin and even sort of enjoyed it.

The sushi servings were quite sizable - maybe 13-15 pieces each? I lost track.

The cost was $45 or so for this level of dinner. Adding an appetizer brings you to the next level and adding sashimi on top of that was the sort of grand feast level.

Oh my sorbet was plum and it was KILLER. Extremely refreshing.

Anyone else have an experience with this place?

Yes, $45 per person. Not a cheap meal, certainly, and not one I'd rush to repeat, but the quality seemed to justify the cost in my mind.

We've been going there for $20 lunch for some time. Everyone I've taken there for lunch's been very happy.

You get sushi (10 pieces and a roll?) or chirashi, which is beautifully arranged sashimi on sushi rice. They are both excellent. Fish is very fresh and they give you nice varieties. Comes with miso soup with nameko mushrooms, (much better than average miso soups)and seaweed salad. Great selection of sake and wine. Very clean and stylish decor, nice folks. Highly recommended for a great lunch treat.
