I keep driving by this place - it's on 14th street NW just north of John Laurie Blvd on the east side (the ASK dental building) I'm super curious but when I'm in the area I'm usually in a rush getting to/from DD's JrK. Any hounds out there know anything about it?

They posted an ad in a local Columbian Google Group - http://groups.google.com/group/ColombiaCalgary/browse_thread/thread/78cc525fbe52ad78#

John is correct (once again) - empanadas, fritanga, mantecada, capsules.
(From some badly translated Spanish).

Mmmm ... fried meat.

Fritanga: Fritanga is a popular meal throughout Colombia, from the coast to the highlands. Fritanga refers to a heaping plate of meat, which may include chorizo sausage, blood sausage, ribs, chops, steaks, organs such as heart or kidneys and more in any combination. Guaranteed to sate any carnivore and send any vegan into therapy, fritanga is generally served with potatoes and/or fried bananas. Unlike the parrillada of neighboring Ecuador, fritanga is not grilled but fried in oil in a deep saucepan. If you’re in Colombia and you think your arteries are up for it, give this most typical dish a try!

Thanks for filling in the blanks. I could only come up with a more generic "fry up." Unless it comes with a free AED (automatic defribulator) my arteries probably shouldn't go near it. I am curious though - sounds like it's a bit more involved than just empanadas. I have to wonder how much space they have since their frontage can't be more than maybe 10ft.

Without seeing the size of actual dish, it might be a family-style communal meal. And the desserts could be interesting.

Besides it could give the maple syrup in your veins a run for the money.

I finally stopped in this afternoon...and well, I think I built it up in my mind a bit too much. They have set up in what looks like the corner of the building's lobby, the only decor - a couple of prepaid phone card signs and two lawn chairs. Deppaneur style decor aside I picked up two chicken empanads, a slice of mantecada and slice of plantain cake(sorry can't remember what it's called). The empanadas were probably better yesterday. The first was so stale the chicken and dough were both tough. The second was definitely fresher but not at all spicy - just chicken, rice and judging by the yellow tone, maybe turmeric? I don't know what I should have expected in terms of spice but there didn't seem to be any flavour beyond the chicken and rice. Other empanadas I've had have been a lot more complex in flavour, with aromatics mixed with the protein, some with a chili sauce some without.... The mantecada was nice, a very lightly sweetened crumb cake is the best way to describe it. The plantain cake was the highlight of the trip, and if I were looking for a latin dessert to complement a themed dinner I just might see if they'd sell me a whole one.
