Need Waffles Badly

My wife is 9 months pregnant and due to gestational diabetes, she has been on a very restricted diet. Something no pregnant woman should have to suffer. Her #1 craving the past 9 months has been waffles. Really good waffles. Does anyone have any suggestions? It'd be helpful if they were in or near the city limits and if the places do take out. I would love to surprise her in the hospital with a big sweet mess o' waffles. Thanks

  1. Great waffles at Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown. Very good waffles at Mike's City Diner in the South End, and the Hen House Wings N Waffles near Newmarket Square.

Also great waffles (weekends only) at Centre Street Cafe in JP.

However, I have two concerns: waffles really don't travel well - they're worlds better eaten fresh off the waffle iron. And if your poor wife is suffering from gestational diabetes, will her metabolism really be up for a big sweet mess o' waffles in the hospital?

Unless something's changed recently, the waffles at Deluxe Town Diner -- which are excellent -- are only available on weekends. But I'm with Allstonian on this: waffles do not travel at all, and while the thought is undeniably a very sweet one, the reality might be disappointing.

Yeah, I was worried about that. I had visions of driving madly through the city streets and delivering the waffles with the steam still rising. And to MC Slim, as long as her blood levels are normal post labor, it's carb eatin' time. Thanks for the suggestions.

      2. This town is in sore need of a Waffle House! Good luck and congratulations, bsmurray!

          Waffle House? Really?

Sorry, but I tried them in several states (AR, PA, MD, KY, IN,...) before I gave up on them. Each time, I'd almost swear I could see an "Eggo" logo on 'em.... and, they were usually cold!

Now, if there was an Original Pancake House around, NOW we'd be talkin'.

Sorry about the semi-OT rant; and conratulations to the OP!

            Congratulations, OP!
I'm a fan of both Waffle House and OPH, and if I had to choose would go OPH for the 49er flapjacks. That said, Waffle House has historically had a strong commitment to quality ingredients with the same dedication as their shockingly employee-friendly policies. The waffles are a pre-made mix, but I'm very surprised to read their mildly sweet, eggy, sotolon-esque waffles to eggo.

Maybe I just had bad luck, or was a victim of too much hype from friends who'd grown up in the South and Midwest. Maybe I should try again, bringing my own syrup?

OTOH, we're totally in sync with the 49er flapjacks! Those have been my "go to" order at OPH for almost 30 (gulp!) years!

          2. Maybe the hospital has waffle irons in the cafe? May not be great, but more convenient, with less "travel" time.
