Need Advice!
My husband and I are taking out my Italian cousin and her husband for dinner this week. No steakhouses (doing Luger's next week) or Italian restaurants. I'd like to find a place with entrees priced between $20 and $40 if possible. These people eat well but have no pretense. A nice atmosphere conducive to talking is all we need. And of course, good food and good value.
Anywhere in Manhattan is fine.
Am I searching for the impossible?

Absolutely not impossible! I would suggest Allegretti. Delicious Contemporary French/Provencal cuisine. Welcoming staff and professional service. Warm, attractive and conversation-friendly ambiance.

there are dozens of options, but it'd help to have a better sense of what kind of food you'd prefer...

re: Simon
I'm really open ... I don't want to limit my options by imposing cuisine restrictions or preferences, other than what I've already stated --- (no Italian, no steakhouses). I guess we should probably stay away from restaurants that are heavily French, since my cousins frequently vacation in France. Otherwise, I'm all ears!

re: marls
With this additional French restriction, my Allegretti suggestion is now out! :-(
If you and your cousins like Indian cuisine, I highly recommend Devi.
