Best Indian & Vietnamese restaurants on Ludlow near U/Cincinnati?

  • 5

Hi,
I'm in Akron, OH, and my son is a freshman at U/Cincinnati and I'm driving down to Cincinnati Thursday to bring him home for the winter break. I want to do lunch at an Indian restaurant near the campus on Ludlow - can anyone recommend a restaurant with the best lunch buffet??? We only have one good Indian restaurant in Akron & I know there are a bunch of them near the UC campus. We've done Chicago Gyro and Habanero's on visits to UC but I want to do Indian this time. We don't have any Vietnamese restaurants in Akron and I'm really hungry for a good pho if someone can recommend a good place near the UC campus. thanks for any help!

  1. For Indian, many here believe Ambar on Ludlow (right near Habanero's) is the best in town. I'm not the biggest fan of Ambar but it is good, though not a buffet.

For Vietnamese, there a hole-in-the-wall on Clifton just south of campus called Cilantro. Been a few years since I've been there but I've heard good things since. Good Vietnamese in Cincinnati is Song Long in Roselawn, about 10 minutes from campus.

Thanks, that is good enough to know. We've been to Habanero's - we were just there for lunch when we took our son & a local high school classmate back to UC after the Thanksgiving break. We drove by Cilantro on Clifton on the way to the dorms on Calhoun St and I mentioned to my husband I thought Cilantro was a Vietnamese place. We've lived in Boston & Cleveland -often the best food is in hole in the wall unassuming places. Thanks for your help. Very helpful

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I go to Cilantro often and love it. I have no frame of reference for Vietnamese other than Cilantro, but to me, it's tasty! Ambar is also my choice of Indian food near UC. Where did you end up?

Well, in the end, since Columbus is 2hrs from Akron and Cincinnati is 2hrs from Columbus and we were going to be driving in the Columbus area about lunch time, we decided on Ha Long Bay which is Vietnamese off the Polaris Parkway exit in Columbus. My husband and I both had very good pho. Thanks for the Cilantro and Ambar recommendations - they are on my list for next time we are in the UC area during a lunch or dinner window, perhaps when we return our son to UC after the winter break.

    2. I've eaten at Cilantro - and unless they've changed the menu - there is no Pho at Cilantro. It would require the drive out to Roselawn to Song Long, which if you're not familiar with the area would probably be longer than 10 minutes. Personally, I was not a fan of Cilantro at all in terms of Vietnamese food - and found it more to be a very decent noodle place.

Ambar is the classic "best" Indian food the area, but the food at Amol or Akol can be good and a little less expensive.
