I haven't been to Joe Abbracciamento's in Rego Park in over 30 years, even though my parents still live in the neighborhood. My husband and I will be in the area during Christmas week and are looking for a nice place to take my parents one night. In the past, we've gone to Salerno's, but I hear that's gone now. How does Abbracciamento's compare? If you've been lately, what are your favorite dishes there? Thanks!

My reply is late for last Christmas but I hope you took you parents there. Joe's is an old standby. The food is consistantly good and served by pro's. What I believe makes a huge difference here is that it is still family run after all these years. The senior Abbracciamento's (RIP) were lovely, warm and kind. Their sons posess the same fine qualities. I am proud to have known them for countless years. May they continue to run this wonderful restaurant forever.

Thanks for your reply. We didn't make it there last year, but we'll be back at Christmastime this year, so maybe we'll give it a go then. What are your favorite dishes there?

I like so many things...Appetizers: Italian mixed salad, hot antipasta, stuffed artichoke, bakes clams. Entrees: veal marsala with mushrooms, chicken francese, shrimp oreganata or francese. Just thinking of these dishes makes me want to go there now! I hope you enjoy it.

I was just at Joe Abbracciamento's for a catered affair. I had the broiled salmon. The piece of fillet was large, perfectly cooked and delicious. The pasta was al dente. The potatoes tasted as if they were roasted with bacon fat. The green beans weren't all gray and mushy. The bread was served hot. The best catered meal that I've had. I am going to have to go back and try their regular menu.

I have since learned that Joe's is a favorite of Rudy Giuliani and of Geraldine Ferraro.
