What is fresh ginger root's country of origin?

Was reading a thread on Home Cooking about ginger spread, making your own. I use fresh ginger quite often. I did a quick Google and kept coming up with China as the major source. Is this true?

Ginger can be grown anywhere it's hot and humid, like here on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

There's some organic ginger grown in Calif's Central Valley (STockton, Fresno, Modesto, etc.)

When I purchase ginger root from Publix it is always imported from Central America. One night my daughter remembered--at 10 pm--that she needed ginger for her high school culinary class the next morning. I had no choice but to go to the 24-hr Super Walmart--a store I was morally opposed to patronizing.

Well, that store has the BEST ginger I've ever bought ANYWHERE. It's from China, and the roots are large, juicy and potent.

The numbers reported in the Wiki article are:
"India, with over 30% of the global share, now leads in global production of ginger, replacing China, which has slipped to the second position (~20.5%), followed by Indonesia(~12.7%), Nepal(~11.5%) and Nigeria(~10%)."

However those numbers don't indicate how much is sold fresh, as opposed to dried, ground, candied, etc.

Probably. Most garlic comes from China, too. And when you cook a chicken, while it may have been born and raised in California, it was likely portioned in China, then shipped back here.

I believe most ginger sold in North America comes from China, but I once saw a Food Network (Canada) show that had the host travelling to Australia to investigate produce. He visited a farm that grows some awesome looking ginger, but I doubt any of it is being sold on this side of the ocean.
