Seen any Maine shrimp yet?

I read the season opened on Dec 1, 2008. Has anyone seen them in boston area shops yet? I love those little guys and a shrimp dinner sounds good tonight...

No, I just want to know where I might find them today.

    2. I saw a sign up yesterday at New Deal in East Cambridge for Maine shrimp (also Nantucket scallops) but didn't actually go in, just give them a call.

I stopped by New Deal last night (Monday, Dec. 8) and they did have the sign up but I was told that none actually came in. I'm going to call today or tomorrow to see if they're going to get them in. Will post back. Will they let you reserve some?

Most fish markets will allow you to "reserve" specialty items. Just call and say, "Would you please hold onto a lb (or whatever) for me and give your name..and appx time you'll be by to pick them up.

      1. I'd like to know if anyone has seen them with the heads on, please. I find them so much tastier.

        1. I called River street Whole Foods this morning and they had them as of yesterday. I'll get some tomorrow. If anyone finds the head on, please let us know.

          Dinner tonight is a Craigie!

          1. Craigie on Main has the head on Maine Shrimp on their bar menu currently.

Wonderful! I known what I'm starting off with tonight! Thanks Philly

            2. Saw them at the Bedford Whole Foods today; $5.99 a pound.

Also at Wayland Whole Foods - same price.

              2. Sel De La Terre's Boylston Street location has a Maine shrimp on their dinner menu, served as a 1st course risotto with andouille sausage. They now make two delicious risottos on the dinner menu and a great mushroom risotto for lunch. I'm particularly fond of their burger, to which you can add foie gras torchon.

I had a taste of the mushroom risotto yesterday for lunch when a friend (and excellent sharer- she put a perfect chanterelle in my taste.) ordered it. It was wonderful with lots of deep flavor. I'd love to taste the stock they used to make it.

                2. Have you ever picked them up from one of the trucks that sell them on Route 1 in mid-coast Maine? They are usually just $1 per pound!

The last time I picked some up there - March, 2008 - they were actually STILL ALIVE in the truck, jumping around in the scale as the shrimpmonger weighed out my big order.

This sounds like it is worth a trip to Maine with a saute pan!

We had our first of the season yesterday from Whole Foods. They didn't have the head-on. If anyone sees the those locally please post it. Does James Hook carry them?

I posted my recipe on the home cooking thread given by the Chowhound team above.

Oh, and Craigie didn't have the Maine shrimp on Saturday-- they did scallops instead.
