Westside with parents from out of town (but moderate prices)?

Hi, I'm looking for a Westside place to go with my parents from out of town, so a unique, special occasion type place that looks decent but is moderate in price, like a sub-$40 in Zagats lingo. Somewhere on the level of Border Grill or Musha (though we've already done those). I was wondering about Typhoon, Osteria Latini, Nanbankan, or something similar.

  1. Nook is a Westside favorite that would easily fit this bill. It's clean and casual but I don't know if it's special occasion to you. Bar Hayama is do-able in this range as long as you don't keep the drinks in check - stylishly casual and has that outdoor firepit - does this qualify it for special occasion? For me, yes, because I'm casual to a fault.

I'm not sure where your parents are visiting from, but I always consider the San Gabriel Valley a must-go for out-of-towners who appreciate great food. Yes, it's about 30-40 minutes from the time you get in your car in the Westside to the time you pull up to one the thousands of eateries out in SGV, but the food cannot be duplicated outside of this area, and the quality/price ratio is pretty hard to beat. Just something to consider...

    1. Orris on Sawtelle should do nicely..
