Well, HSF on Bowery, f.k.a. Hee Seung Fun is gone. In its stead is Sun Shine 27 Seafood, the new incarnation of what used to be Sunrise 27 Seafood at 27 Division St. It's strange to have 27 in the name of your restaurant when you're at 46 Bowery, but I guess the number 27 has been good to them as they make the leap from Little Fuzhou into the main part of Chinatown. The new Sun Shine 27 is experiencing what is sometimes referred to as the looky loo effect in Chinatowns throughout America. Whenever a large new Chinese restaurant opens, throngs descend in mass to be the first on the block to try the new restaurant. (The same rule does not apply to small new restaurants.) Consequently large new Chinese restaurants are always packed when they first open even if the place eventually turns out to be a culinary disaster. Even on a weekday afternoon there is a mass of people waiting to be seated for dim sum at Sun Shine 27, with hardly anyplace to turn or breathe inside. I'm certainly not going into the vortex of the crowd at this point, so if any of you are brave enough to try Sun Shine 27 in the next few days I would appreciate a report.

Meanwhile the old 27 Division St. location is now occupied by Jing Star Restaurant, which I suspect could merely be Sunrise 27 with a new moniker, since they still have the old Sunrise 27 take out menus on display. The food at Jing Star is still very good, as is just about every other of the restaurants on Division St., which I think might have the best concentration of restaurants in Chinatown.
