WashPA Eats (washington,pa.)

I have recently returned to Washington, Pa and I was wondering what your thoughts were on places to eat in the area? I don't think too highly of the Union Grill (except for their outstanding appetizers) and was curious if anyone has a favorite place. I also have not tried Angelo's after their move to near the ball park although I doubt it would change the quality of their food.

I usually just end up driving to Pittsburgh....any help you could offer would save me a ton of gas!

ps. Anyone remember the small Italian place off of route 40 behind West Tire out towards the park? Can we pay them to come back? That place was a hidden gem!

Last night - Dinner at Franco's on 19 in McMurray. Very good food and decent wine list. The meatballs are excellent. Very nice decor. Great for our area.

Bado's in McMurray and I am a fan of Harry's Pizza. If you like sushi try Bean Curd which is next to Harry's. All mentioned are located on Route19.

I have not dined at this restaurant but I've heard a lot of raves about Carmen's Restaurant in Canonsburg, PA.

Alfano's is very overpriced for the quality of food served. I'd much rather drive out to the excellent Lautrec or the mid-range Chez Girard. Although not an upscale place, my favorite and just about the only place I eat in Washington is the BBQ joint, Hogfathers. I think it has the best BBQ in South Western PA. The Greek takeout is mediocre, Tuscan Tavern has decent bar food (grilled sandwiches and homemade chips), the Mexican restaurant by the DMV is pretty much the same as El Campesinos, I haven't bothered with any of the Chinese restaurants, and the rest of the bar/restaurants I've been to aren't worth mentioning.

If you haven't bothered reading all of that:
Lautrec: Worth the drive from Pittsburgh or anywhere in the region
        Hogfathers: Excellent BBQ

Just in case you google it, it's spelled Chez Gerard.

I forgot to mention that Rolands does not really have a beautiful exterior...Please don't let that stop you!!! Also, Panini Guy mentioned that there is a Sharp Edge near by...I haven't been to that one either (didn't even know it was there until I read his post!) but I also really like their other locations.

The Sharp Edge Brasserie is a really nice place with lots of seating and TVs. The beer is typical Sharp Edge albeit on the expensive end, but the food has not received very high accolades. I ate there once and the food was decent, but it is still a bar food/lunch place rather than a dinner destination.

"The beer is typical Sharp Edge"
What this casual statement means is that it is probably the best selection of Belgian beer in the country. Also a wide selection from other countries.

Don't know much in Washington proper, but there are a few places in Peters, so you don't have to drive all the way to the city. For upscale, Alfano's on 19 near the casino. Midrange and very good is Bado's Cucina. For lower end, up the road a bit in Peters is Harry's Pizza. And there's a new Sharp Edge in the Radicchio shopping plaza. Haven't been in that one yet, but we love the Crafton and Shadyside locations.

You may be thinking of Rolands...Even if that's not it, I would recommend it as the best bet in the Washington area. I think the Union Grill is a great place for drinks and sandwiches and never really liked Angelo's much at all, although I have not been to the new location yet.

There is also a place just a little north in Cannonsburg called Nocchi's (I think) that was very good the last time I was there. Good luck!!!
