Gilt or Adour
Please help, Chowhounders! I need to pick a place for my boyfriend's 25th birthday and I've narrowed it down to Gilt or Adour. I am wondering if people can give me more details on either. We will be doing the tasting menu, tend toward trendier places with great food (obviously). Also, does anyone know how Christopher Lee's departure at the end of this year is affecting Gilt right now, if at all?
I am a regular customer at Adour and just returned from having a snack of cavier, champagne, and desert. They are two tasting menus now at Adour: the standard and the white truffle menu. Both of which I have had recently and enjoyed them both. You can see them both on the adour alain ducasse website. Although I love Adour, as I do all of Alain Ducasse's restaurants, you may be disappointed if you enjoy 'trendy" places to eat. You may want to look at Corton as well.

I love truffles.. both white and black. What drives me crazy is when a restaurant offers white truffles and the truffle only passes the blade just a few times... ie. a skimpy portion. I know whites are expensive and all that, but some restaurants really don't provide a worthy portion for the price they charge... and you have no way of knowing that in advance. I like to go to Italy (especially Alba) in white truffle season where many fine restaurants sell truffles by the "portion" but also offer the option to purchase an ENTIRE truffle.... you pick the truffle and they weigh it... you pay according to it's weight. Then the truffle sits on the table and you're in complete control... the waiter slices it for any dish you want to use it on... as much as you want... you already paid for it... HEAVEN!
This was long intro (sorry)... the question is, "How generous was Adour when you ordered the truffle menu? Did you feel it was adequate? Grazie!

Agree with sethd... I'd go to Adour. Was there about 10 days ago with my wife and we really enjoyed it. As it was my first visit, opted for the Regular Tasting Menu... also added the Pork Dish to share as an additional course. The service, both wine and food, was very polished as you typically find in Ducasse's more high end places. The bread service, butter, etc. was superb as well, as expected.
I thought the tasting menu was a good way to go... excellent items and perfect portion size. Highlights were the Hamachi starter, vegetable composition, duck. The dessert was very nice and they will let you select any on the menu... so I'd suggest having it and opting for a diff. one as the 2nd dessert as they are large enough to share. The lobster pasta dish was good, not great. Still enjoyed it. I'd say that the pork dish we added as another course was not a dish I'd recommend.. I was interested in seeing what they did and it was so so in my opinion. An additonal course certainly wasn't needed. The tasting menu is perfect as it is.
I've had the truffle menu at some of his other places and didn't go for it as I wanted to try the regular menu items. He always does a great job with white truffles so Im sure it would be excellent... Ducasse always seems to get the best truffles around.
