Wasabi tobiko / caviar in San Francisco

JulesSF Dec 4, 2008 12:12 PM

I am trying to find wasabi tobiko - the small green fish roe, colored and flavored by Japanese wasabi.

I have tried the main grocery store in Japantown - no luck there ...

Any ideas where to look in the Bay Area ?

I've seen it at Berkeley Bowl
In the freezer case next to the fish counter

Yes, Tsar Nicoulai has it in the ferry building. It's a little novel, but why buy that when you can get it "unflavored"?

tsar nicoulai sells wasabi flavored whitefish roe. the OP was asking for wasabi tobiko, which i believe is made from a different fish altogether, flying fish. i gather that the "unflavored" roe you're talking about is their sturgeon roe, or *true* caviar. apples and oranges, with an even greater difference in the wallet.

        Thanks everyone!

It seems that Berkeley Bowl has the tobiko kind.
Not sure if whitefish is the same roe, but my recipe specifies wasabi tobiko, so I'll just make my across the Bay before the holidays ...
Berkeley Bowl is a great place to shop, just wish it was on my side of the bridge ...

I've seen both the wasabi and regular tobiko at San Francisco Fish company in the ferry building.
