PoBoy (other than Johnnys) in the FQ?
We are looking for a good PoBoy (probably roast beef but possibly oyster) in the FQ. I hear how good Johnny's is but we are looking for a cool place to hangout, have a few drinks, and a eat a good PoBoy. Where do you recommend close to Ramada's Inn on Bourbon (Bourbon & Touliouse St)? We are having dinner at Stella. Is that easily walkable from our hotel? Also, how about a cool bar with good blues or jazz (no cover) between Stella and Inn on Bourbon? Thanks for your help.
I had an excellent oyster po boy at Coop's, which for my money is also a cool place to hang out. I also had a really good soft-shell crab po boy at Maspero's. Not as cool a hangout, but a fine sandwich. My wife loved the roast beef po boy she got at L'il Dizzy's at the Whitney, but that is a couple of blocks outside the Quarters.
Speaking as a longtime professional musician, some of the best blues anywhere, and certainly the best on Bourbon is when Big Al Carson is in place at the Funky Pirate. Yes, he sings for the tourists, but he is one GREAT singer. No cover. There might be a minimum but I doubt that it's ever enforced. Ask him to sing "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On".
It has always seemed to me that unless you are going from one extreme corner to the other, nothing in the French Quarter is more than a 15 or 20 minute walk from any place else.
