My Recs for Take Away Sushi places

While Zen, Aoyama, and Cafe Michi are all in my neck of the woods and offer take-away, they are quite pricey. Here are my top fav places to go for good quality/ well priced takeaway platters of sushi, sashimi, maki, and other goodies.
(Scarborough and Markham area)

Nichiban Sushi
3517 Kennedy Road, Toronto
Tel: (416) 609-2442
Great, fresh fish- my favourite place in this area. Nichiban has been around for over two decades. The Japanese owner is friendly, so I go there often. I usually order the $30 sushi/sashimi combo which i can polish off by myself.haha
(take away only)

Sapporo Ichiban Sushi
250 Alton Towers Circ, Unit B 6/7
(416) 754-7575
Again, good fresh fish. Owner gives you free handrolls when you spend over $20 on orders. (usually it is pieces of mushroom, mayo and crispy tempura bits)
The place has also been around 20+ years. Bonus: they're open till midnight mon-sat
(you can dine-in as well )

Ni Ji Sushi
1095 Ellesmere Road, Scarborough, ON M1P 2W9
(416) 755-3335
A popular place right off of Midland RT stop. Although, I find their platters to be the priciest out of all these recs.
(you can dine in as well)

Sushi Ichiban
(Pharmacy Ave. & Ellesmere Rd.)
80 Ellesmere Rd., Scarborough, Ontario
Tel: (416) 447-3250
Entertaining owner.. likes to play classical music in his sushi place. Gives you a free handroll while you wait for your order. Last time it was warm salmon with terriyaki sauce.
(small area to dine in)

Hokkai Ya (Ninja as acutally stated in their take-away menu) Sushi
395 Bamburgh Circle, Scarborough, ON M1W 3Y1
(416) 756-4904
Medium Sashimi platter is $30 only with 45 some odd pieces.. a good value. Menu selection is not as large as the other places mentioned.
(1 very small table to dine at. or 3 stools are available by the sushi bar. )

Tora Sushi (in J-Town)
3160 Steeles Ave. E., Unit 6-11, Markham(north side of Asian Kitchen)
Haven't eaten here yet, but heard that they offer good quality fish... don't know about the pricing though.

Happy Eating!

  1. Great list! Its hard to find good value sushi in south Scarborough around Eglinton, any more recommendations there?

I always get take away from Sapporo Ichiban, great value for the party platters.

J-town they also have discounted bento boxes and cooked fish in the fish area after 5-6pm. They close at 7pm.

    1. Any updates on Nichiban? I've only been there once, and was wondering whether I should revisit them for take-out...

I was also wondering if the situation on takeout sushi downtown has changed any.. I end up going w/ Yuzu or Japango most times.

I am also a huge fan of Yuzu and Japango, their quality of take-out is great. But I definitely have to mention Sushi 930 at 930 King St. West.

The freshness is right up there (in fact, one of the sushi chefs used to work at Japango) and pricing is similar too. The difference is it's purely a take-out joint, and the variety of fish in the combinations are excellent. Feel free to check out my blog for pictures of the best ones.

The best nigiri combo is Sushi #8 which comes with 6 piece maki and 8 nigiri for $18.95. For Sashimi go for Sashimi Sakura ($19.95) which features seven types of fish based on the chef’s picks of the day, like Hiramasa (King Yellowtail), Amaebi (Shrimp), Tuna, Albacore Tuna, Salmon, Aji Tataki and Sea Bream marinated with Kelp. This place is tops with me for take-out when I'm in the King West 'hood.

          Sushi 930
930 King St W, Toronto, ON M5V, CA

          Aji Restaurant
7604 Yonge St, Thornhill, ON L4J1V9, CA

Can you speak for the take-out party platters at Japango? I've seen photos of the fish served at the restaurant, and it all looks great, but I'm worried about how the party platters might vary.

I'm curious about Nichiban Sushi 4-U on Kennedy Rd (@ Steeles).

          Any updates?

        3. Well Taro has moved from J-Town a while ago and is now Sheppard Ave and Leslie. I recall them having some of the best sashimi in town for takeout. Nothing beats you choosing nice hunk of tuna and having it sliced for sashimi. I still like Sushi Bong for value in yonnge/finch area.

          1. My go to sushi takeout place is Taro's Fish in North York.

Taro's sashimi is great, however I find their rolls poorly made. they always fall apart on me
