Mail order Panettone - Ideas??

I am looking to send one as a gift. In past years I have used William Sonoma but I was wondering if there were any better ones out there. Thanks!

gustiamo.com has the best mail order panettone IMHO. They buy it from small producers in Italy, and I send one to my mother-in-law every year. deananddeluca.com also has a decent panettone.

I checked out the panettone at my favorite Italian deli over the weekend with this thread in mind.

They (2 lb. each) were two for $12. The mail order ones have to be outSTANDing before I would order them. Are they?

I decided to order one for my mother-in-law after I wrote this post, so I went to Gustiamo.com where I have ordered in the past. Their panettone are artisinal and particularly wonderful, but the price was off the wall this year at $75! Artisinal, smartisinal, I'm not spending $75 for a panettone. Dean and Deluca was actually more reasonable at $36, so I ordered from there. I don't know how outstanding they are, but it is a gift being sent to California so $36 seems reasonable to me!

It is simply the best, they ship and it arrives in perfect condition. Handmade from a biga that Gary Rulli brought back from the bakery in which he apprenticed in Italy. I've ordered these for years and I've got friends that are disappointed if I give them a gift other than a panettone from Rulli's.

Well, this is a distressing turn of events :-( Their panettone is so good. I'm glad his business is expanding (yet again) but I'm gonna miss that panettone, it is scrumptious. I may have to make a run up to the Bay Area and be my own shipping department <sigh>.

Was there on Sun. and saw the Panettones coming out of the oven. Wow...they did look good. I've never had one from Rulli.

Looks like it would be worth the trip.

The shipping issue looks like it might just be a 1 year hiatus???

Do yourself a favor and try it. Since you're local, try a slice before you buy. I love the Rulli's panettone toasted and served with hot chocolate. For me there is just something very indulgent about that combination. And the best part is I never feel guilty ;-)

Not true. I just called them and they are taking orders by telephone, just not on the website. No explanation was asked for or offered.
