Blackwater Grille, Hendersonville, NC????

Thinking of trying Blackwater Grille this evening. Is it good? If not, besides Flight, what is another good restaurant in Hendersonville.

  1. So where did you end up going and how was it? I didn't see this post until this morning, so not much timely help, but will still pass along my opinions for your next outing. :)

We have been to Blackwater Grille about 10 times in four years and love it. Some people have found them uneven, but we have had only one experience that was so-so vs. great. But to their credit, they went out of their way to make it better (and we weren't making a scene, just disappointed and told the server when she asked how things were). We like Flight but find them a bit pretentious sometimes. We also love Never Blue, but we were in there last night and they have changed up their menu to be more tapas/small plate oriented but still have several entree sized items. While that's not a bad thing, I loved some of their entree items which are no longer offered. We love their food and atmosphere. Bistro 502 has been very good when we've been, but it's always empty. Service sometimes spotty. West First is awesome, but much more casual than Flight or Blackwater. Also, if you like fresh seafood, Blue Water Seafood on Kanuga is very good and serves dinner now.

We ended up at Blackwater. I thought it was average and probably won't go back. I wasn't thrilled with the menu itself and my pork was tough. I much prefer Flight - the menu and the food. Thanks for your recommendations.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience. The one average meal we had there (last summer), my husband's steak was tough, which had never happened before. Wonder if they are slipping? I thought I had heard a rumor that Scott (the chef/owner) was considering leaving (as chef) to spend more time with his family. Wonder if that's the case and if it's had a negative effect.

I do like their menu though, so we may have different tastes. Although I like Flight's menu too.

    2. i've been a few times and found it very middle of the road, although service was good. shrimp & grits were sub-par compared to sunny point's/tupelo's, some sort of signature trout dish (i don't recall the details anymore) was just so-so. best thing i've had was a filet. generally, the food has been underwhelming enough that the next day it's difficult to recall what i had. mind you, it's not bad... just average.

as to other places in h-ville, my tastes run to the lower end (which may account for why i'm not fond of places like blackwater - when it gets pricier, it's got to be worth it). i like il padrino (sp?), one love, papas & beer, blue water seafood, west first...

        what/where is il padrino?

you make a good point about what your expectations/price points are. I love One Love and Papas 'n' Beer too, but both are much more casual than what the OP seemed to be looking for. I was trying to think of higher end places that might work.

i think i did spell it wrong; i think it's El padrino. i apologize if i steer you wrong as my mental map of h-ville is fuzzy (as my wife works there, she drives when we go), but i believe it's on kanuga near blue water. it's a little taco place. cheap, very good and great service/really nice people.

there have been a couple of posts over the past few years, one by danna. you might find better directions if you search through her old posts (or, if she sees this, maybe she'll confirm/correct).

OH! right, I know the place. Gotten good feedback. Yes, it is across from Blue Water. I haven't been there yet (but want to go), so the name didn't ring a bell. thanks!

Speaking of Blue Water, is it true they are now serving dinner? Anybody been?

Yes, they are. We went for their all you can eat mussels night a couple weeks ago ($14.95 including a glass of beer or wine - limited selection - still a good deal in my opinion) and it was very good. We haven't tried any of their other dinner menu items yet. Have heard good things though and they are on too. I had their pumpkin cheesecake, which was very good too - house made and reasonable (I thought) at $3.95. the menus are on their website: under "restaurant". They are supposed to be opening a smoke house soon, but I don't know if that's open yet or not.

Sounds good, and thanks for the link.
