It would help if we had a few more details. Do you have a price range? Do they like or dislike particular type of cuisines? Is there a particular vibe that they would prefer or location? The more info you provide the better we can help you.

price is not an issue. Nothing to uptight just good food

The best restaurants in DC are:
1. Citronelle - very expensive and probably the most famous fine dining restaurant in DC, there's a 10 course tasting that's around $190 per person.
2. CityZen - you can do a 5 course tasting around $100 per person.
3. Komi - 15+ dishes, ranging from bite sized to a fairly large portioned final protein dish for around $100 pp.
4. Minibar in Cafe Atlantico - 30 bites of molecular gastronomy around $125 pp.
Prices to not include drinks, tax, or tip.
In Alexandria you have Restaurant Eve. Even farther from DC you have Inn at Little Washington. Can't go wrong at any of these restaurants.

I agree with all of the above and would add in Central, Palena, and Corduroy.

My fave in town is Vidalia - modern American cuisine, casual but quiet dining room, sublime corn-bread, and very comfortable chairs! (I have fantasies about their lemon chess pie...) Its located right between downtown and Foggy Bottom on M street - not too far from Georgetown.

Thaiphoon! (I think that's how its spelled) Its my most favorite Thai place ever. It is located in Dupont, and very metero-accessible. The menu is cheap, especially for D.C. Entrees range from $7-15. It is very cute inside too! Enjoy.

If you are looking for Thai I personally think Regent Thai and even Mai Thai are MUCH better then Thaiphoon (which I find really mediocre even for it's price point).

Palena or Komi. But there are loads of great places to try like Central, Brasserie BEck, Taberna del Alabardero, Tosca, Obelisk, Mendocino Wine Bar & GRill, and many others.

'Phoon is OK but Regent is indeed better - ask for the dry herb box if you're really into tweaking it.

Elyssa, you should try Thaitanic on 14th Street. I was pretty impressed on my first visit a few weeks ago.

I kind of like Old Ebbitt Grill for guests who come into town. It's a nice American bistro-style place with lots of seafood. It is located right next to the White House and has an excellent happy hour special...

thank you everyone.

You may have already decided to send your in-laws for some molecular cuisine at one of the more trendy restaurants, but I would send them to Obelisk, which is chic, relatively informal, and delicious from antipasto to the sweet bites that come with the bill. It represents what's lasting in D.C., which in many respects is a city of transience. In-laws like symbols of permanance! Obelisk is the real deal.

thanks that sounds right up their alley.

I would also add Mendocino Grill to the list if you'd like to be in Georgetown.
