Local food gifts
I'm putting together a gift basket for my foodie uncle-in-law, and I want to include some local treats. They can't be perishable, so I'm thinking bottled sauces, candies, etc. He lives in TX, so I want to get him stuff from the area that he can't get down there. Any suggestions? I'm limited to the DC metro area.

The Virginia Chutney Company makes fabulous chutneys, and they definitely fit your criteria for shipping. They are great around the holidays too, as you can use them with so much: from a condiment to a standing rib roast or alongside a cheese plate before dinner.

Both of the farmer's markets I frequent have quite a few local non-perishables. I can only speak for Penn Quarter (Thursday late afternoon-evening) and Dupont Circle (Sunday 10-1), but I know at least there you'll find jarred sauces and preserves at various stands. There's a stand at Penn with honey, apple butter, and homemade horseradish. There's also a farm with buffalo that's a both markets that has jerky. Good luck, sounds like a really fun and thoughtful gift.

Definitely go to Penn Quarter and Dupont Circle. Also Marvelous Market's famed Chocolate Chip Cookies. It's a pity that blue crabs and oysters are perishable. A can of Wye River Red Crab Soup. Virginia peanuts. Crabanero Hot Sauce. A copy of Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay by William Warner.

Try Cowgirl Creamery. Some good non-perishable cheeses - and other gourmet food items if I'm not mistaken. They also have plenty of cheese local to Va.
Check out my post on it here: http://www.examiner.com/x-1632-DC-Din...

Sorry to disappoint, but Cowgirl Creamery is actually from CA - they may have some great local cheeses, but they started in California and DC is a second location for them:
