Just started watching so know very little but I noted they are subtitling the french judge too (like Morimoto) despite his speaking English. not necessary.

otherwise seems be interesting.

i'll never understand why they do that with the subtitles. maybe some FN exec's kid, niece or nephew needed a job & they assigned him or her to subtitles, so they need to find excuse to use them...? :)

i was really surprised Symon didn't do anything with bacon - his chocolate-covered bacon was such a hit on Dinner:Impossible that i was waiting for him to bust out the combination...like chocolate ice cream with a sugared bacon topping or something!

sounds yummy. i thought his menu looked good though. and there's always the risk of the not original criticism - although i doubt it with this set of judges.

speaking of the judges...what was UP with having Patti LaBelle - a diabetic - as a judge for a chocolate battle??? the chefs may not know what the secret ingredient is going to be, but the Chairman & the producers certainly do. i can't figure out if she just didn't bother to disclose this info to them when she agreed to be on the show...or if they did know, and didn't consider it when choosing judges for this battle. either way, i thought it was pretty irresponsible.

I agree, Patti was way out of element during the judgement. I liked the interplay and explanations of flavors between the French judge and Cady.

Overall, I am glad the Symon won, his food looked great and I loved the geometric presentation of his desert course (the chocolate bars). I felt that Cora's was just slopped together since she was trying to do too much for originality points (liquid nitrogen and an anti-griddle?). Her sous could not handle everything and she was constantly on them. This lack of communication and inattention to the overall battle showed in her desert course (the gelatin christmas trees) because it looked haggard and thrown together.

                    those gelatin trees looked AWFUL!

i thought the french judge was good - he could be on more often if they didn't subtitle him.

forgot about patti being a diabetic but that really is dreadful planning since they did so many desserts. that said mango could be just as bad as a secret ingredient for her because of the sugar load but WOW - it does tell viewers that what their doctors are telling them doesn't really matter and that is HORRIBLE!!!
