San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Christmas Day dinner suggestions, please

We live in Los Angeles, and our making our annual trip to San Francisco from 23 December to 2 January.

In 2006, we ate at Manka's, which unfortunately won't be open until the Spring. Last year, we tried Auberge du Soliel. I think that was the wrong day to eat there - too much rush of service, and probably the same in the kitchen. The food didn't justify the price.

Don't mind driving to either Napa or Sonoma, but maybe there's someplace in the city; without the drive.

Haven't decided on Christmas Eve yet either, and don't know who'll be open. Some thoughts I've had about that dinner are 1550 Hyde - Zuni - Bix - Rose Pistola - Epic Roasthouse

    1. I can't think of a nicer place for Christmas Dinner than The Dining Room at the Ritz. They always decorate beautifully and Ron Siegel will be in the kitchen on that day ensuring you won't repeat a Auberge experience.

It might also be nice to stay at The Ritz and just be able to walk up to your room after dinner. That is actually a nice area on Christmas. There is midnight mass at Grace Cathedral ... I'm not of that religion but loved the service on the year I attended.

I think 1550 Hyde would be a lovely Christmas Eve dinner, just down the hill from the Ritz (well up the hill, then down). It is a cozy, intimate neighborhood place on a cable car stop.

I'd have reservations about Epic. I stopped by Thanksgiving evening and they were closing down early due to lack of business. I lived about two blocks from the restaurant (though before it opened) and during the holidays that neighborhood shutters up. The restuarants do better during the week with business from the financial district. Rose Pistola I'd put at the bottom of my list.Haven't been to Bix. I like Zuni, but I think 1550 Hyde is a better choice for Christmas Eve.

rworange - thanks for your input.

Definitely will go to the midnight mass, which starts at 10:30pm

As suggested Open Table can give you what is open both Eve and Day.

Opentable hasn't put up the link for Christmas yet. The closer to Christmas the more restaurants that are added. They probably won't have the link until Monday or later next week. Last year they actually skipped the Christmas list and just put up New Years.

I get reservations for 12/25/08. Is it a mistake?

I meant they don't have a special link yet like thanksgiving
