Mincemeat in Berkeley/Oakland

For pie! I've looked at Safeway and Trader Joe's. No luck. I probably don't want the old fashioned kind with suet because my dad won't eat it. Though if you've seen that, maybe you could let me know. (It used to come in a box, brick-like. Does it still?) The Joy of Cooking has a veg. recipe with apples, raisins, etc.. I might make that, but I'd rather be semi-lazy and find it in a jar and use my own crust. On the other hand, if there are good ready made pies out there, maybe I'll just do that. Thanks for any help.

  1. I've seen the "bricks" at Nob Hill in Alameda. They were on an endcap. I've also seen them in the past at Lucky's also in Alameda. As my dad is the only one who eats mince pie, I've ordered one from Nation's. Put a little brandy hard sauce on it and he is a happy fellow.

Nation's has mince pie? Now? This year?

I second a sighting at Raley's aka Nob Hill. At one time Andronico's carried it, but I haven't been there recently.

I love mince pie but other than Marie Callendar's, no one makes it ... especially with Walker;s going out of business. Fat Apples makes an apple version. They said no one would order it otherwise.

I'll have to check out Nations. Thanks. I was hoping to get to Mission Pie to see if they had any,but that didn't work out.

Yeah, I know last year the Nob Hill in Alameda had several different kinds of mincemeat on an endcap with other holiday specialty foods.

Last year, I actually made mincemeat -- with suet! I still have some in a jar in my pantry waiting for me to do something with it. We never have it at Thanksgiving since my grandmother died, because my dad and I are the only ones who really like it. Grandma always brought it from the Boniere, and I'd assume they would still have it.

Yes, Nation's has mince pie. It is listed as November Special flavor. I ordered one last week for Thanksgiving. As to the taste, your guess is probably better than mine as I'm not a pie person. I think the flyer also said that they would offer mince in December.

      2. June Taylor had some mincemeat recently. No suet.

        1. We picked up one of the box/bricks at the Lucky in Pinole late last week. Probably still have some left. They also had it in jars, but my wife (the only one who eats it) sneers at that variation.

Funny how people either like it or don't touch it. I'll try the El Cerrito Lucky. Thanks.

If you don't find it there, the San Pablo Raley's has the boxed as well as several different jars. There is also hard sauce ... a plus for me. I picked up a slice of the Nation's mince pie and I'm going back for some of that hard sauce ... mince pie is all about the hard sauce really.

              1. re: Glencora

Got it. The El Cerrito Lucky had the box and two kinds of jars, one with brandy (or was it rum?) and one without. I went for the box. My dad can eat the pumpkin pie. I also saw some hard sauce. The ready made pies were just pumpkin, apple and pecan. Probably not good.

Saw it at both Andronico's on Shattuck and Raley's in San Pablo. Has anyone ever looked at Berkeley Bowl? I know they had lots of fruitcake fruit but I wasn't looking too closely.

I liked the sample at Petaluma Pie, but not enough to make a special trip for the mincemeat pie. Their's is dried fruit based with stuff like apricots.

                1. re: rworange

Berkeley Bowl had jars on the end cap today.

I've seen boxes this year but I forget where, I think it was Raley's.

I couldn't get any venison from my local sources or I'd have made my own.

                  1. re: Scrapironchef

Venison! Not sure the little kids would be into Christmas Bambi pie. My husband was threatening to make it from scratch following a recipe that calls for beef cubes and pickle juice.

Anyhow, I got some from the Shattuck Andronico's. Thanks. Didn't see it at the Solano store.

                  2. re: rworange

The Nation's in Orinda had the mincemeat pie listed but did not have one in stock this afternoon.

Piedmont Grocery has jars of Robertson's and Crosse and Blackwell.
