after 10 years of faithful service our toaster oven in about to give up the ghost. On investigating the replacement options I find that I am not going to get a new under-the-counter model - they seem not to make them anymore. We have used the oven feature *some*... but mostly like the flat design of a toaster oven for visibility and toast retrievability. handy when you have folks who like different levels of toast-ness. ;-)

So if you were about to give up precious counter space for a new toast-making appliance, what brand would it be and would you select a toaster or a toaster oven?

TIA!

I can only tell you which one I wouldn't get again if the one I already have breaks down. I've had the Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven™ Countertop Oven/Broiler
(SKU: TRO700W). It does toast, bake & broil, however it's a bit bigger then my previous one plus it's very hot on the sides and top after we use it. Also we have to keep an eye on it when it's toasting, it doesn't turn off when the item is lightly toasted. It keeps toasting so you have black toast and smoke all over your kitchen...

Have a Kenmore toaster oven. Accomodates 4 slices of bread. Well built, toast/bakes/broils nicely and has an auto-off/timer that my old B&D ones did not. Recommended.

We've had a Krups FBC2 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven for a little over a ear now and have found it to be a nice unit. It toasts well and bakes well. A bit more expensive than some (but less than we paid) but, IMO, worth it.

We've got a Krups unit as well and love it. The three ceramic heating rods on top provide a nice, even heating. It toasts great, with even browning.
As an oven, it keeps decent temperature and for a couple of potatoes it sure beats heating the whole kitchen.

We have a Cuisinart toaster oven with a convection oven. It makes great toast and the convection oven is great for baking chicken and roasting vegetables. The wife did the research. There's none better.

Here's ConsumerSearch's review: http://www.consumersearch.com/toaster-ovens

Based on that (and based on our usage habits--I like to get a new one every 3 years or so), I opted for the best basic toaster oven, the Procter Silex 31115.
