Funky vibe and coffee in Atlanta - help out a first-timer!

Hey 'Hounds!

I'm looking for a funky, laid-back coffee shop with great sandwiches and/or paninis for a night bite to eat. I'll be in Atlanta for business and staying at the Westin, near the airport - not familiar with the city but willing to explore, so something (relatively) close by is preferable but I'm willing to travel for better food! Thanks all!

The only places with any funk about them near the airport (that I know of) serve BBQ and soul food. Rent a car and get directions to Virginia Highlands (30 mins). Nice vibe. Park and walk about. Have a good trip.

Agreed. Or take MARTA to Decatur and enjoy all the good food and potentially the vibe you are looking for.
Java Monkey Coffee House and wine bar
Brickstore Pub and many other cool places

Haven't been to R. Thomas on Peachtree Street in a few years, but it is a funky 24 hour spot with sandwiches and other options on the menu. They lean towards organic and health conscious foods, but there are plenty of deviations as well. Have a good trip!
