Baker's Ammonia?

Does anyone know where I can get this (other than via the internet), preferably in the OC area? I bought a tiny, tiny jar of it at Surfas (for what I considered an exhorbitant price), but I don't want to drive all that way. Savon's pharmacy had no idea what I was talking about when I called (I was told it can be found at pharmacies).

  1. A good substitute for one teaspoon baker's ammonia is:

    - one tsp. baking soda, plus one tsp. baking powder

Results might not be as light and crisp, but it works just fine...

    2. Well I'm not familiar with any place in OC but up here in Los Angeles, there are several places that carry it. LAX-C downtown on North Main has it. However it's a fairly large tub and will run about 11.00 or so. Silom plaza market in Hollywood also has it in the same configuration. Theres a German bakery in Montrose at the low end of Ocean View that has smaller bottles of it. Best bet outside of the internet would be a local chinese, vietnamese bakery. They make their morning doughnuts with bakers ammonia and it makes them very airy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. They are called Patangko, or Patango in Thai, Good luck!

      1. If you have time, King Arthur Flour, kingarthurflour.com/shop/ has it.
