Hi, Im new to chowhound and am looking for a restaurant for december-we finally have a babysitter so my husband and I would like to go out for a romantic dinner (finally date night!) on a thursday. We are looking for something not in Tribeca or UES. Preferably romantic (aka adults only), but no jacket req'd and not pretentious, but more importantly good food as we are VERY picky! Probably about $120 no alcohol. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I was all set to tell you one of my favorite romantic spots...but then you said No Jackets :(..anyway, they supply one if he does not want to wear one, and I just LOVE this place..

    La Grenouille

The place just ooozzes with romance and the food is delightful!

Here is my next romantic pic that fits the bill..and no jacket required:

    Cafe Des Artises

It is just beautiful and I have always had fabulous meals here.

    Do enjoy!

Since you say you are "very *picky*" about food, you should avoid Cafe des Artistes. Sadly, it's way past its prime insofar as the food there is concerned, i.e., mediocre at best.

Also, if that $120 budget is your out-the-door cost (food, tax & tip) for two, there is no way La Grenouille will work. If you've looked at the prices on their website, I think you'll see what I mean.

She could have 2 dinners and split an app. at La Grenouille. (that is if she really sticks with the budget, which I know everyone goes over when it comes to dinning out.)

Last I was at Cafe Des Artises I thought it really made a nice impression on me. The service was great, all of our meals were memorable, and then there is the murals on the walls.....ahh delightful!

We had dinner last nite at JoJo on 64th. (Since I live in the '80s I don't count 64th as the UPPER East side.) Downstairs is cozy. Dinner for two.. with 4 glasses of wine... was $156. Without wine itmight be within your budget.
Lots of jeans... no jackets (except for my husband!).. but not sloppy. Food is good. I love the chicken with olives and lemon with chickpea fries.

That's good to know - we haven't been there for ages.
