Low Country cookbook suggestions

I am in search of a Low Country cookbook to give as a Christmas present. The recipient already has Hoppin' John's book but wants another book. I am eyeing "New Low-Country Cooking" by Marvin Woods. Any opinions and advice would be appreciated.

I just got a copy of "New Low-Country Cooking" by Marvin Woods at a used bookstore...have not cooked from it yet. But
if you want to chat about it, I'm interested...

I like the look of the green rice.

Thanks Jim and LaLa! I appreciate your responses. Maybe I'll get both! :)

Woods's book is available from Edward R. Hamilton for $8.95. I got one a few months ago, but before I had a chance to cook from it I had to move, and it's still packed in a box somewhere. I do remember taking a look through it and finding it not very impressive. I will enthusiastically recommend "Charleston Receipts," if your intended recipient doesn't also have that already. By the way, I grew up in the South Carolina Low Country.

Thank you, Jim. Is this the Junior League Cookbook? I love those!

Yes. I, too, am in general a fan of Junior League Cookbooks. Some are better than others, of course, but I think this one is exceptional.

I just picked up a copy of Charleston Receipts from the early 1970s. Any particular recipes that you recommend to start with?

Thanks! Is it correct that benne seeds are sesame seeds? I'm really excited about this book, and am noticing interesting "cross overs" amongst it, and various English cookbooks that I've been using lately.

Benne seeds are sesame seeds, yes. There are a lot of good recipes in that book, and I hope you have great fun with it.
