Have gone a couple of times to Zingerman's Roadhouse for their barbecue special on Thursday night and liked it a lot. From Monday to Thursday they have a fixed-price plate called something like blue plate special for $12.95. It comes with sides--mashed potatoes and greens in the case of the barbecue (some pork and a few chicken wings). It's a moderate-size portion, but I actually like this--it's a way to avoid the overkill aspect of Zingerman's. And even if you add a craft beer or an appetizer you get out of there for around twenty bucks. Not bad--if you start ordering everything you see on the menu at that place the bill can mount up dramatically. If I were ravenously hungry I wouldn't go for this, but the quality is very high.

I went to Zingerman's Roadhouse in the first week of opening, and it was terrible. Their bbq chicken was literally a dried out chicken breast smothered in ketchup. It was basically inedible, and they wouldn't take it off the bill. Their recompense was a free, day-old loaf of bread. I went back a month later and it was still terrible, so I decided not to go again and waste money. Since then, I've been hearing some favorable reports about the food. This Thursday special sounds like a step in the right direction.

I used to be able to eat at the deli for $5, if I got a knish and matzo ball soup, but i think the prices have gone up since then. I was so proud to eat at Zings for that little money but with a fully belly.

I didn't like it at the start, either, and I'm still not sold on everything on the menu (the burgers specifically do nothing for me). But I think it's improved a great deal.
