Haru - new sushi place
I hadn't seen anything on Chowhound about this newish place on San Vicente just south of the Beverly Center. Sushi places are a dime a dozen in LA, but there is such an emphasis on fresh and healthy ingredients - the salads are made with organic ingredients, they use rice bran oil for deep fried foods, and most importantly, the fish is very fresh.
My friend and I started off with a generously sized seaweed salad, and a side order of sauteed shishito peppers.
They offer an extensive selection of specialty rolls, as well as traditional sushi/sashimi offerings. My friend started with an order of yellowtail sashimi (2 slices to an order), which was very fresh, and I ordered spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls. I generally don't venture too far from the rolls, but the spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls were both delicious, and in my opinion, better than those I've had at Sushi Gen. The spicy tuna/spicy scallop rolls came 8 pieces to an order.
We also tried a Caterpillar roll and Rainbow roll. Again, very generously sized.
They have a nice sized selection of premium green teas, but no alcohol unfortunately. The service was extremely gracious and personable. I would love to see more people discover this place - I really enjoyed it. Our food total came to just under $70.

Haru is amazing. The sushi is wonderful, fresh, and organic. I usually get the sushi set, which at lunch is only about $15. It comes with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, ono, sweet shrimp, and a scallop. Oh and soup, salad, and 3 pieces california roll, and the BEST spicy tuna roll ever. In addition to great food, the front of the house is run by Kuni's (the chef/owner) fieance (Haru) and his roommate. They are very sweet and make you feel at home. I know, sounds like and ad, but I love these guys! Oh and Kuni claims to NEVER forget the face of any of his customers! ^_^
Was there yesterday and the ono, uni and sake (salmon) were the best I ever had (have been consuming sushi for many years and in different countries (in Asia...sans Japan, unfortunately...North America and South America).
They now have a liquor license (don't know if it's just for beer & wine or if they have other hard liquor as well).
