Single Barrel/Small Batch Bourbon

I have found out that my boss is a bourbon drinker and I am thinking of buying a bottle of something nice for a Christmas present. However, I know very little about bourbon, can anyone suggest a good single barrle or small batch bourbon?

Thanks!

    Scott,
Not knowing how far you have climbed the managerial ladder, if you are looking for something that is on the lower end of the price range of single barrel bourbons. I would suggest Evan Willians Single Barrell. Even thought is sells for around $32 for 750 ml it is one of the smoothest better tasting single barrel bourbons. Often I will try ofthes that are more expensive but I always come back to EV Single B.

    Good Luck

My vote would be for th Van Winkle 23 y/o, but it's kind of pricey. next would be the Black Maple Hill 20 or 17 y/o, Rowan Creek 17 or Noah's Mill. after those, it's a step down to Rock Hill Farms, Blantons, Eagle Rare, the Beam group(Basil Hayden, Knob Creek, Baker's and Booker's), Russell's Reserve and the like. there are a lot of good ones being made, and much depends on your taste preference

It's hard to recommend for someone whose taste you don't know, but here are a few to consider:

Four Roses has a single barrel and a small batch.
Eagle Rare 10 year old single barrel
        Blanton's (single barrel)
        Rock Hill Farms (single barrel)
        Pappy Van Winkle
Elijah Craig 18 year old (single barrel)

Most of these are in the $30-$40 range. If you wanted to go for something more expensive, you could look at Eagle Rare 17 year old, Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old or Parkers' Heritage, which are all in the $50-$75 range.

Keep in mind that unlike the term "single barrel" which indicates that the entire bottle came from one cask, the term "small batch" is a marketing term with no specific meaning.

I second the Elijah Craig recommendation. I've tried other bourbons but keep going back to EC, especially considering it's about 60% of the cost of Maker's Mark. I haven't tried any ultra-premium bourbons.

I like Makers Mark. If you live on Long Island, the Bottle Bargains/Buys/ Bottles and Cases Chain has the 1.75 for $41.99--get that and you'll be the 'king'

Have you (or anyone here) tasted the Elijah Craig 18 yr old? My local Costco has it right now for (I think) about $32. I would like to try it, but an informed opinion wouldn't hurt. Thanks!

It's one of my favorites. It's got a lot of wood, not as much sweetness as some Bourbons and huge complexity and character. The only caveat is that it can be inconsistent. The best bottles are phenomenal though. At $32, I would definitely give it a try.

I really like the Blanton's. It's an excellent bourbon and it has a really neat stopper.

The stopper is a jockey on a horse. There are 8 different stoppers all with a letter. The 8 would spell out Blantons.
If your boss has been collecting them then he may get a stopper he's not got. If he hasn't, you may have opened up Pandora's box.

Pappy van Winkle 20 year old would be my choice. If it is pricier than you would like, they make a 12 year old.
