Beard Papa Question?

Son and I have been in Waikiki for 6 weeks out of the last two years, which this place is always highly recommended to us...we've never even thought about eating Beard Papa's here...and my son works at City Square where one is now...

Why so good????????? What am I missing?

    Most BP locations have high traffic which means the puffs are usually quite fresh. They aren't as good as puffs made at premium patisseries....assuming you get them when they are fresh at these places -- a hit-or-miss affair, more often than not.

      hehe, I should just say, that in Waikiki, we could never figure out the fascination either! You are so polite fmed! I can't wait to meet you! :-)

        LOL - Well I kinda like them. I thought they hit the spot....but I definitely would not endure a long lineup to get them. Luckily, the hype has subsided.

        Fmed is correct ... the pastry puffs don't compare as well to European-style pastries. I bought a dozen last year in Waikiki (Food Pantry location), and they were disappointing for me because the filling is custard. I grew up in a small town with one bakery run by German immigrants and I love real whipped cream with flaky pastry. On the other hand, my spouse liked BP's puffs because he prefers the custard filling (He is originally from the U.S.).

        I wouldn't say they are mind-blowing, but they're fun and pretty tasty. I find the Green Tea or flavored versions are better, the plain ones are a little bland. Good if you can get them, but as someone else said, I wouldn't endure a long line-up for them.

          I actually quite like Beard Papa. I love the custard in the puffs. As for the ones with whipping cream, I enjoy it as well however, sometimes there's too much whipped cream and I end up feeling gross or they use the fake stuff which I'm not fond of. When I was in Shanghai a month ago, I tried their chestnut cream puff and it was really tasty. They made it fresh too, mixed the chestnut puree with the custard when ordered.
