PHX Fresh Swedish Potato Sausage

This might be a long shot. My family traditionally has Swedish Potato Sausage at Christmas. I'm pretty sure Schreiner's will have it. I'm willing to drive a little, but, the far East valley is probably too far out of the way. I'm only interested in something made fresh, locally. Thanks!

  1. Try Von Hansen's Meat Market - Alma School north of Warner. I had some this week end and it was good, but not what I was looking for. I am looking for Lithuanian Potato Sausage - mostly very coarse ground potatoes, some onions and some ground pork scattered here and there in beef casings. My dear mother used to make it and has passed and we were not smart enough to get a recipe.....

Thanks, that's interesting. I prefer a coarse grind, but, that seems to go against the Swedish authenticity, from what little I've read.

FYI, Von Hanson's did not have fresh, tonight. They do, for the holidays. I was told they'll have it Tuesday, for Thanksgiving. I picked up a cooked one to try. They also had frozen, uncooked.

    2. I like the potato brats from the Pork Shop. Might not be what you're looking for though? Probably too much of a drive, too but definitely worth trying (along with the green chile brats) if you get down that way.

Sounds like way too much flavor. :^)

I'll get to the Pork Shop, one day.

Maybe the German Sausage Co. has something similar? BTW - what's your aversion to Schreiner's?

No problem with Schreiner's, I just wanted everyone to know that I already knew they have it for the holidays. I'll probably get some from them, but, I figured I'd try some others, as well.

The only time I tried to shop at the German Sausage Co., they were busily putting together the restaurant, and didn't seem to be minding the sausage shop. Have you been, lately?

I was there this past Friday night. Quite a few selections, although I really wasn't looking to purchase anything. You'll want to call and check for hours - they are definitely unusual.

      2. MAJOR nostalgia for fine-ground Swedish Potato Sausage. Wow, everyone please keep this discussion alive for the holiday season! So Schreiner's on Tuesday?

I had half of my Von Hanson's precooked sausage for breakfast, this morning. It was okay. The meat ratio seemed a little high, and the potato and onion chunks seemed nice sized to me. I am planning to get fresh wherever I can, and report back. It might be Christmas, though. The folks are cooking a leg of lamb for Thanksgiving.

        2. Update: I ended up getting fresh sausage from Schreiner's. It was a hit, with the 'rents.

German Sausage Co. doesn't make it.

Von Hanson's and Stanley's Homemade Polish Sausage Co. make it, but, they freeze it, right away. For Christmas, I'm calling both of them to try to have some set aside. Schreiner's freezes theirs, too, but, I caught them before it had frozen.

The fresh Polish at Stanley's looked really good. Man, I love sausage, but, I don't think I'd love taking Lipitor!
